Old Lick Cemetery Project

      Old Lick Cemetery Project


  • First Baptist Church, Gainsboro
  • Harrison Museum of African American Culture
  • Virginia Museum of Transportation


  • Volunteers will clean the cemetery of trash and brush to increase access to the tombstones for students to safely visit for social studies opportunities and service projects
  • Volunteers and students will collect information on tombstones and map locations for archives at the Harrison Museum of African American Culture and First Baptist Church, Gainsboro

Volunteers will complete grant applications and fundraising for

  • New Sign
  • Flower Bulbs
  • Tombstone Cleaning or Restoration
  • Replacement of Gates
  • Plaque describing brief history
  • Plaque in honor of the relocated graves
  • Replacement Fencing
  • Electronic equipment for Harrison Museum Kiosk
  • Volunteers will clean up trash and clear overgrown brush. Volunteers need to wear long pants and shirt sleeves as well as bring rakes, loppers, pruners and other personal handheld tools for clearing brush.  Volunteers will assess needs for chainsaw work and repairs requiring heavy equipment.
  •                                                                                                        Volunteer certified chainsaw operators will cut any predetermined branches, limbs, shrubs and small trees to increase visibility of tombstones and to make area more aesthetically pleasing. Arborists will remove trees as needed.
