Volunteers
are the lifeblood of the Virginia Museum of Transportation, handling
tasks in all areas of the museum’s daily operations. Below
is just a sample of various jobs our volunteers do. If you are
interested in volunteering or interning with the Virginia Museum
of Transportation, contact the Volunteer Coordinator at (540)

Docent/Tour
Guide
- Study
and retain a thorough knowledge of the museum’s collection
highlighting historical relevance and significance to Virginia’s
transportation heritage
- Lead
guided tours of the museum grounds, OR
- Work
exclusively in one or more of the museum’s galleries to
answer questions and provide supplemental information to museum
exhibits and artifacts.
- Work
with Director of Education, Curator, or other museum worker(s)
to gain new information and understandings of Virginia’s
transportation heritage.

| Admissions
Assistant
- Sell admission
tickets to patrons, providing them with maps to the museum.
- Answer
any questions patrons may have about museum services, exhibitions,
or other programs.
- Provide
physical assistance to patrons requesting it.
- Keep
records of admissions, including tickets sold, numbers, and
age demographics.
Gift
Shop Assistant
- Actively
sell merchandise and museum memberships.
- Answer
any questions customers may have about merchandise, or pricing.
- Keep
records of sales, including cash, checks, and charge cards.
- Assist
in stocking shelves, cleaning, and setting up new displays
Facilities
Assistant
- Tasks
vary with assignments, but can include cleaning floors and windows,
dusting exhibits, replacing light bulbs, and other general maintenance
tasks.
Archives
Assistant
- Assist
with the preservation and cataloging of original documents and
artifacts
- Assist
in the design of new signage and interpretation for museum exhibits
