The Museum is large and much of our collection is outdoors. We recommend comfortable walking shoes and clothing appropriate for outdoor temperatures. Please call ahead to confirm holiday hours and inclement weather closings.

Admissions tax of 5.5% is in addition to the rates shown at right. Discounts are available for

  • members of AAA, the National Railway Historical Society, and the Norfolk & Western Historical Society;
  • holders of the Roanoke Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau Red Card or a Roanoke Valley Library card.
  • active military -- The Virginia Museum of Transportation is honored to support our active duty military personnel this summer. Blue Star Museums runs from Memorial Day, May 31 through Labor Day, September 6, 2010, and offers free admission to active duty military personnel in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and active duty Reserve and active duty National Guard, and their immediate family members. Military personnel or their families must present a CAC Geneva Conventions ID or a DD 1173 active duty military family ID to receive free admission for up to five family members.

Joint tickets are available that also include admission to the O. Winston Link Museum and the History Museum of Western Virginia. Joint tickets are $12.00 for adults; $10.00 for seniors (age 60+); and $8.00 for children (ages 3-11). Joint ticket prices include admissions tax. Group rates are available, please call ahead.

Most of the Museum—including the Rail Yard, main gallery exhibit areas, rest rooms, and the museum store—is accessible to persons with disabilities. The Model Circus Exhibit is in an upstairs gallery accessible only by stairs. Stairs are also necessary to enter the rolling stock that is open to the public.
