Virginia Museum of Transportation Celebrates World Space Week

World Space Week, October 4-10 annually, is the largest space event on Earth. More than 5,000 events in over 80 countries celebrated the theme “Space Unites the World” in 2018.  The 2019 theme is “The Moon:  Gateway to the Stars.”

Our Aviation gallery and the Oral History of Astronaut Leland Melvin. Leland, from Lynchburg, Virginia is the only person drafted into the National Football League to have flown in space. Leland Melvin tells the story of the challenges he’s accepted and the opportunities he’s seized — and how they led him to the International Space Station and a whole new perspective of life on earth.
