Railroading Merit Badge Day

Event: Hands-on opportunity for all Scouts in the Great Valley District to spend the day at VMT with full access to the rail yard and museum activities. Earn the Railroading Merit Badge, tour historic equipment, visit an operating locomotive, and go for a short train ride. Lunch and a VMT patch are included. Space is limited on a first-come-first-served basis!
Cost: Event fee is $25 per Scout and includes VMT admission, full Museum access, short train ride, knowledgeable instruction, lunch, patch, and use of individual tablet computer.
Registration and Payment: Registration and payment is due by September 30 and must be submitted by the Scout’s parent, guardian, or troop leader in person, or mail to: Blue Ridge Mountains Council, 2131 Valley View Blvd., Roanoke, VA 24012, or email email@example.com using the form below.
Classes: The Railroading Merit Badge Day is being held at the Virginia Museum of Transportation, 303 Norfolk Ave., SW, Roanoke, Va 24016. Scouts are required to check in beginning at 9:00 am, with program welcome beginning at 9:30 am. Classroom time will alternate with hands-on time outdoors during the day’s event. Lunch will be from12:45 to 1:30 pm. Free time will be allowed in the schedule for Scouts to explore Museum exhibits. Scouts are required to check out, beginning at 3:30 pm. Full day attendance is required to earn the merit badge.
Merit Badge: Scouts completing all merit badge requirements per www.meritbadge.org, as determined by the counselor, will have their blue card signed as completed.
Prerequisites and Homework: None. A detailed plan of the day’s events will be sent to each registrant furnishing a valid e-mail address.
Scout Responsibilities: Scouts must register and pre-pay, check in and check out on the day of the event, bring a Blue Card signed by their Troop Leader, wear a Class A Scout uniform, bring appropriate outerwear to permit several hours of outdoor participation, bring pen and paper, and observe the Scout Oath and Law throughout the event.
Adults: Scouters and parents are welcome, but must register and pay the event fee of $25 to cover VMT admission and lunch.
