611 Boiler Washout

August 19 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

It’s that time of year for some 611 maintenance! Join us at the Virginia Museum of Transportation Saturday August 19 for a peek at what goes into keeping her in tip top shape.

Crew members will perform a boiler washout and guests can see what is involved as the crew performs their work. The boiler washout is a required maintenance job by the Federal Railroad Administration. Chief Mechanical Officer Scott Lindsay will lead the crew in some disassembly to access the boiler and firebox. They’ll remove all of the plugs and then will wash all of the sediment out of the boiler and firebox using high pressure water run through a water treatment program. The gauge and spindle valves inside the cab will also receive a thorough cleaning.

We’ll have some information for you to follow along with what is happening as you watch. The crew will be working hard and getting dirty to get 611 ready to roll. We ask that all visitors keep a safe distance from the engine and enjoy!

Normal museum admission applies. Closed toe shoes recommended.
