Locomotive Driving Wheel Pattern
This large wheel was used as a pattern for making iron locomotive wheels. Wheel patterns were made out of wood. Special molding sand is poured over the pattern, then the pattern is removed and the iron for casting the wheel is poured into the sand mold. Once the metal has cooled, the sand is removed and the wheel is finished to make it smooth. These wooden wheel patterns are not typically painted, and if well maintained they can last for many years.
