Norfolk & Western ALCO
C-630 Diesel Locomotive, Number 1135
Developed in 1965 in response to
General Motors' SD40 model, Alco introduced the Century 630 with
a 16 cylinder 251 E engine and an AC traction alternator. Ten
C630's were purchased by N&W in two groups. The first group
of five were delivered in 1966 and rode on standard Alco Tri-mount
trucks. In 1967 the second group, which included the 1135, was
delivered and rode on trucks salvaged from Fairbanks-Morse Trainmasters.
All C630's had high short hoods and
long hoods; Norfolk & Western considered the long hood the
front. Since these units were in the minority on a roster dominated
by GM and GE units, they were expensive to maintain. After an
unsuccessful attempt to sell them to the Chicago and Northwestern,
they were all converted to hump yard slug masters and assigned
to service in Portsmouth, Bluefield, Roanoke, and Norfolk.
